Last summer I ran across a fellow who mentioned the product Penetrol,
but shortly after that, (probably due to a rum shortage) I forgot
the name. It's supposed to stop the oxidation of the gel coat that is
applied to the mold prior to the fiberglass. This is the top coat
that we see.

Penetrol is the product's name. Buy it at a paint supply store, not
a chandlery -- cheaper. Buy it by the gallon for better savings!
Penetrol is mentioned in many articles on painting as a thinner: with
varnish, just lightly brush it on the surface to be recoated, varnish
over it when tacky -- I have miles of varnish that rarely sees
sandpaper. Rubbed over oxidized gelcoat, it supposedly brings back
the shine.
It works.
