We actually use two tow vehicles. 1) Dodge ram 3500 (dual rear wheels) with the cummins turbodiesel. Tow capacity 13,000 pounds, so it is much more than is necessary for the boat. 2) Jeep cherokee, tow capacity 5000 pounds. The jeep generally does fine towing the Rhodes, but would do better if I had good trailer brakes. For comfort, I usually tow with the Ram.
Just traded down to an S-10 from a 1 ton dually 454 4X4 4 dr pickup. So far the S-10 has impressed me. I don't think I'd try this without the 2 speed transfer case though.
For hills and mountain driving, you need the torque of a V8. In Colorado we needed at least a V8. Now in eastern Carolina the biggest hill is an overpass. We find that just about anything can pull the Rhodes 22 on the flat. Key consideration is "can you stop the Trailer?) Smaller tow vehicles can be challanged with that.
1995 AWD Chevy Astro minivan with factory HD trailer towing option
1990 Ford F-250 460, 4X4, 4 speed automatic. No problems towing upwards of 12K#!!!
Our '88 GMC Suburban, with rebuilt 454 cid engine, pulls great. More important, the GMC is capable of stopping the boat/trailer combination. (Our old Triac trailer is not equipped with brakes.) Anti-slip rear is wonderful on boat ramps. There is plenty of room inside the GMC for motor, tiller, rudder, bimini, mast hoist, crutch and tools when we launch in spring and recover in autumn. We also use cargo carrying space for ice chests, books, overnight bags, etc. when we sail on weekends. The GMC does have a thirst.
2000 Tundra. Nice truck all around
1999 Toyota Tacoma 6cyl 4wd works great. The trailer will start to sway at around 60mh.
