Keith -

This sounds bizarre.

Assuming there is adequate tension on the shrouds particularly the lower
side stays, the mast shouldn't I think be able to rock enough to lwt the
tabernacle rise enough to account for a mounting screw to back out 2".
Also, the slot in the tabernacle itself would allow the base of the mast
to lift before starting to pull the screws out of the cabin top.

One thing I would also be a little concerned about is if the core is
sound. If it had any rot, that might account for the ease at which the
screw rode up.

I'm sure it is not an appealing thought, but you might want to consider
dropping the mast and checking out the situation carefully. It can be
done on the water with a total of three people, 2 on the hard. It would
beat the heck out of having the mast come down at an unplanned moment.

I will be in Madison from the 19th - around the 30tyh.

If you need help feel free to give me a call. I can be reached at
203-245-8289 (the home of my inlaws) or my cell 914-953-3821.

Subject: [Rhodes22-list] Mast Base-plate

I would appreciate any insight anyone on the list might be able to
provide for this problem.

A bolt has worked its way out of the mast base-plate about 2 inches. As
it worked its way out of the base-plate it also has impinged on outside
edge of the IMF mast, narrowing the opening The bolt's position on the
base-plate is starboard, aft. I have had my R-22 (Aria) newly moored for
about a week or so in North Cove. I would guess maybe that the mast has
been moving as the boat rocks with the waves. North Cove is
protected--very little wave action.

To fix this I would guess I need to screw the bolt back into the cabin
top. However, that doesn't fix what caused this. The backstay adjustment
was a little loose. I tightened the adjustment.
