Thanks, I think it's all coming down to the rudder cleat problem.  I need to
fix that then see where I am.

If the boat is trying to go away from the wind you have Lee helm - not
Weather helm- a very dangerous condition.  In this case I'd say the genoa is
overpowered and you need to reef it, or the main is not trimmed correctly.
You should definetly not sail in that condition.
