[Rhodes22-list] surveying

Gene,

As long as I'm at it, I'll throw in my 2 cents worth too. I bought our 1995
R22 (recycled by Stan in 1999) in June of 1999. Stan offered a 2 year
guarantee that the boat would be free of structural defects. This is the
same as his new boat warranty. Ask most anyone here, we are almost all
owners, Stan does a good job of standing behind his warranty. Just my
opinion now; if I were going to buy a boat from Catalina or Compac, for
instance, I wouldn't send a surveyor over to their shop to survey the boat.
They are the builders and they are offering you a warranty, same as Stan
and General boats. If you go with a recycled, save your 4 or 5 hundred
bucks for some cool boat stuff.

If I were buying a boat, no matter what brand, from a private party or a
broker, now that's a whole 'nother thing. Unless I already knew the boat
very well, I would have a surveyor involved in the purchase. The surveyors
unbiased opinions and knowledge of the cost of repairs and values can be a
very valuable asset to someone who might be "smitten" by a boat. In this
case it might save you from buying "a lot of work and extra expense".

Here's another opinion I've formed since I've owned my R 22: I don't
believe you will find another 22 foot boat, designed to do what the R22 is
designed for (lake and coastal cruising), that is built any more solidly
than an R22. Go to a boat show, compare for yourself, you won't watch this
hull oil can when you lean on it, nor will you make this deck flex when you
jump on it.

Kind of full of opinions, ain't I?? :-) :-)

Hope this helps,

Rik
