This site explains that you can fake out the automated dialing equipment
used by telemarketers by recording a certain tone sequence at the beginning
of your answering machine message. When the automation hears the tones, it
records your number as disconnected and does not call again. Link for the

This site says calls from pre-paid calling cards are interfered with when
you let the answering machine answer and play the tones. Something to know
about if you want to try this.

Found out about the above web sites only a few days ago so I  have not tried
it yet, so I can't testify as to how well it works. Telemarketing calls got
so bad that I shut the phone ringers off and use the line only for the
computer. Friends and family know to call my cell phone if they want to
talk. I am going to scrounge an answering machine and try this soon.
