IIRC formula sr(antenna height)*1.15 (for 3db)
so:
(3^.5)*1.15 = 1.999 seting in the cockpit
(8^.5)*1.15= 3.25 standing on a dock
(36^..5)*1.15=6.9 mast hight
(60^.5)*1.15=8.9 bigboat or big sailboat.
(500^.5)*1.3=29.06 coast guard (their have a flatter spread on their
antenna)

taker the two number and add them to together, as in cockpit to cockpit 4
miles+-
cockpit to dock 5 miles, this is over water, if land get in the way you
loose, BTW this is best cases, it might be shorter
