Joe,

There are other VHF experts (Alex comes to mind), but basically VHF is
line-of-sight. If you can see one antenna from the other, you should not
have an issue.

However, using the marine VHF for ship to shore is technically a no-no
(unless for an approved purpose, like contacting a drawbridge, arranging
dockage at a marina, etc.)

The 'authorized' way to do casual conversation between vessels and casual
ship-to-shore is with the FRS radios (Family Radio Service?). They are
perfect for the task, have filters to filter out background chatter, and
have 'similar' range to a handheld VHF. Pick up a pair for $50-$100. We
have the Motorola FRS60, and love them. We use them when caravanning in the
car, at malls, wherever.

Check them out almost anywhere, but here is a start:

What is the range on these? How does land effect this range. I'd like to
have one on the dock while someone is out sailing. Could be a couple of
miles and was trying to see if a hand-held was an option.
