re: cruising guides
We like the Cruising Guide to the Chesapeake Bay that is an annual
publication of Chesapeake Bay Magazine. We buy it every other year or so.
Shellenberger is also great reading and advice. I highly recommend it.

We carry the full size charts for wherever we are going but we use the
"Maryland Cruising Guide" collection of charts as our main chartbook. Its
smaller scale is more easily handled than full size charts and it's a lot
cheaper than the MapTech book. I think there is one for Virginia waters as
well but if you cross the line a lot the Maptech book might make more sense.
