  Dear Rhodies,=20
  We will try to respond to your thread re some of GBI's policies in an =
unconventional manner - a series of e-mails tied to the issue of the =
particular Rhodes owner.=20

  Ah, Rummy.=20

  Right as usual. We have never copywrited anything. And as far as the =
owner of GBI is concerned, she says feel free to print the Rhodes' =
manuals - but she places one request (which I would follow if you knew =
her like I do): "Print it in its entirety without editing. And add a =
notice: 'If, after reading this essay on the Rhodes 22, you have =
further questions, ask the party who you bought your boat from. If that =
fails, ask the Rhodies List. If that fails, and you must get to the =
builder, do not call the plant. Call Stan at home in the evenings at any =
hour at 252 426 1769.'"=20

  To this I must add that those who have bought a Rhodes from someone =
else and given their money to that other party, in all innocence, find =
it hard to understand our reluctance to stop what we are doing to =
survive and respond to their call saying, "you will be happy to hear =
that I have just bought a Rhodes from so and so and now I need you to =
give me your time to answer my questions".=20

  Rummy, sorry I sounded cranky. It had nothing to do with your coming =
to the plant to pick up hundreds of dollars of parts and then telling me =
you forgot your checkbook.=20

  It is that you are right, the recession is killing sailboat builders - =
at least this one. I just had another call from a buyer who we had =
taken for a demo sail, sent mailings, spent money at shows selling them =
and now have to return the spent deposit. A seller, benefiting from our =
costs in getting this buyer, was now able to sell them his Rhodes =
cheaper. We have, and will continue shrugging these things off, but in =
today's economy, to have that seller tell the new owners to contact us =
if they have questions or need service, is the last nail in the coffin. =
The worse the economy the harder we have to work - the more productive =
time we have to put in to survive. If you did not buy your Rhodes from =
us, call us at home if you really have to.=20

  stan/gbi=20

    The owners manual is NOT opyrighted ...=20
    any questions you want answered will be addressed by list members. =
They are a very tolerant and knowledgeable group, just be patient and =
you too will be sailing a wonderful craft. At least our manufacturer is =
still in business......as of my last visit to Edenton. :) Sometimes a =
little cranky=20
    when people want something for nothing, but I kinda like him like =
that.=20
    Speaking of being in business. I have recently passed two large =
sailboat=20
    manufacturing plants in my travels. Normally you would find many =
hulls about=20
    the yard in various stages of construction or simply waiting for =
shipping.=20
    Neither yard had ANY boats to be seen. Must be tough to be a boat =
builder=20
    these days.=20
    Rummy
