After the first day you don't see land until Bermuda. No stopping, it's
straight out into the ocean on a south-east heading for 640 nautical =
miles.
You have to navigate the gulf stream very carefully in order to fully =
take
advantage of eddies or you could end up actually loosing ground.
The crew will be me and one other person due to the lack of accomodation =
and
storage space. This is really a bare minimum kind of crossing.
The Tempest has one V-berth, a sink with counter and freshwater system =
and a
small enclosed head/chart table. The cockpit is quite large but I've
reduced the volume by mounting a cooler in front of the cabin door and
sealing the lowest hatch board permanently. This also gives me more =
storage
space. The cockpit seat lockers are quite large and there's an enclosed
inboard/outboard for the motor. I've also added two so-pac access =
hatches
to the seat-back in the cockpit and I'm going to close off the shelves =
with
sliding hatches to give more storage room in the cabin.
I also have
two autopilots
SSB
VHF
4 batteries
Storm sails
Storm anchor
2 manual bilge pumps
electric bilge pump
......the list goes on and on.
Here's a picture taken when I first salvaged her two summers ago.
I've mounted a solar panel on the motor hatch cover and I'm thinking of
putting one on the cabin slide door. I removed some ballast and =
replaced it
with the equivalent weight in batteries in the same location by building =
a
step below the cabin door.
When you get the boat free it's a lot easier to spend money on prep and =
mods
knowing it will still have a decent resale value at the end.
