<Richard, please excuse my bluntness, but I tend to chafe at such
intrusions into my personal liberty. I think I know far better than you
what the risks are, what Dynamic Equilibrium, my sons, & I are capable
of accomplishing, & I neither need or want your advice. If I screw up,
then I am also prepared to accept the consequences.>
And this is EXACTLY the reason I sail. Sailing is one of the few
recreations where one can go off and kill ones-self. I do not intend
that remark as a joke or a put down. I for one cherish this option.
My opinion was and it continues to be that since the Rhodes (like all
boats) is a compromise. Transom hung rudders, big cockpits, tenderness
and relatively high free board do not an ocean cruiser make. I can't
think of any major author of cruising books who would disagree here!
Roger is used to sailing on a lake. a very large lake indeed BUT still a
body of water without tides and the disturbances which are associated
with tidal flow. All one has to do is observe the ebbing L.I. Sound
Race in a North-Easter!! It (The Race) has gobbled up 300 foot
steamers. The Gulf Stream can get as bad or worse!
Remember the passage under discussion is within the "Bermuda Triangle"
or close enough not to matter. On occasion the conditions in this area
can and have overwhelmed large ships.
Now we come to the meat of the matter. Yes it's HIGHLY probable that
you will make the passage safely and experience only discomfort. BUT I
think it's better to anticipate the worst and the worst here is being
overwhelmed by a large sea.
Since such a voyage is intended as an enriching, pleasurable exercise it
seems pointless to attempt it when the metrological outlook is at it's
most unfavorable!
That's my point. nothing more.
Richard Smith
