Todd,

As far as I understand it, galvanized plough steel cable is inserted into
the socket on a bronze eye and filled with molten zinc. Eyes on the deck
ends all around and on both ends of the forestay. The masthead fittings are
triangular custom cast bronze with a socket cast in at the correct shroud
angle. The socket opens into a deep groove on the backside of the casting,
so the wire is seated about 2 inches deep and the whole groove is filled
with molten zinc. Both the wire and the fitting are preheated above the
melting temperature of zinc for a good bond. Larger yachts rigged this way
were often "parceled and served" meaning the wire and the eyes were wrapped
in tarred hemp or cotton marline with leather chafe patches in the eyes. The
rig was protected and maintained by soaking the served wire with various
concoctions of oils, solvents, and plant resins. Rigs like this have lasted
for 75 years or more without much deterioration if maintained. Brion Toss's
book "the Riggers Apprentice" is a good reference for most types of
sailboat rigging, both traditional and modern. I don't remember how much
detail it gives on the actual brazing process. How are your elevator cables
done?

Razz

Subject: [Rhodes22-list] Razz's Rigging and Reading

  Razz,

I was reading over old e-mails to get the names of the books you
suggested I read. Thanks for the recommendations.

I was curious about the rigging on your restoration of the 1947
Bantam and how the rigging wires are terminated and brazed into the end
fittings. Does any book contain pictures of the process? Is the rigging
wire wrapped with small wire or a swagged on band just above the fitting?
What material is used to fill the fitting and how is it introduced? Is the
fitting large enough to pour the lead-like material in? Is the cable end
"rosetted" inside the fitting?

Just curious. I rig/replace elevator cables and wondered how similar
the process was.
