Bill I love cable tie use them all day long, they have great tinsel =
strength, but I would be nervous about the metal shearing right thought =
them expressly for the ones small enough to fit a cotter pin hole, and =
the quality of them is all over the place, from junk in the plastic ones =
to pretty good for the nylons, just one man option.

  Dick,

I didn't say, but yes I do put the tie both through the pin and around =
the barrel of the turnbuckle. I then wrap the turnbuckle barrel with =
that expensive, thick, self adhering rigging tape so that there is a gap =
at the bottom of the turnbuckle and water does not become trapped inside =
the mechanism. I take care to ensure the cable tie lies flat on the =
outside of the turnbuckle, and the square locking part is inside the =
opening. Then I wrap with the rigging tape. This results in a small, =
neat package that won't scrape anyone passing by.

I used clear cable ties because that was what I had. I am not =
concerned about UV because the whole thing is deep inside the rigging =
tape, and never exposed to light except for the brief instant I =
transport it from my toolbox to its final destination.

  Rummy you have it right.

There are a lot of useful places for those ring dings other than =
securing the standing rigging.

I really like Bill Effros' idea. Did he say if he put the plastic tie =
around both the turnbuckle as well as through the threaded part?

Zero cool, why didn't I think of that?
