Todd,
This must be an incredibly old riddle or math problem because there
hasn't been any such thing as a $30 or $25 hotel room for a long, long
time. The answer is that the clerk charged $25 plus the $2 kept by the
bellboy equals the $27 paid by the three salesmen. $30 has nothing to do
with it.
Paul
>Three salesman came into town for a big convention. Every hotel in town was
> booked up and none had made reservations. They tried to check into the only
> hotel with a vacancy at the same time. The desk clerk told them he only had
> one room left and the rate was $25/night. The three men decided to share
> the room and get two roll-away beds.
>
>The desk clerk said then the room was $30 instead of $25, so each man paid
> $10. Later on the desk clerk felt guilty about cheating the men out of
> the five bucks and gave the bell boy five and sent him to the salesmen's
> room to return it. The bellboy decided to only give them three and kept two
> for himself.
>
>So if each man got a dollar back, then each paid $9. 9 x 3 is 27 and the
> two the bell boy kept makes 29. What happened to the last dollar?
