There is a problem only if you allow the 2 wires to touch each other.  Keep them apart.

My 6hp Mecury outboard has a 4 watt alternator to charge the battery, and works just fine on my boat.  However, my friend wants to borrow it so we can race in the Oriental Cup regatta on his Tanzer 26.  I want to offer the motor, but heard that without actually connecting to an electrical system, running the motor would burn up the alternator.

Anybody know anything about this?  Thanks in advance.
