[Rhodes22-list] UPS sail

Jay,
Yep - Raven's ours. You're probably referring to the pics a friend took for
us last year at http://www.kaynor.org/raven. That sail came with Raven when
we bought her from Gary and Jennifer Sanford. Gary picked it up fairly cheap
somewhere along the line, and it's not really sized for the Rhodes. I think
it's actually smaller than the 175%, but I haven't measured it to confirm.
Over the course of last season we found that we got better performance with
the 175% than we did with the asymmetric, even in lighter winds.
The one time we used it successfully in a race was to pass a competitor who
was upwind of us - every time we caught up to him w/ the 175%, he'd steal
our wind and pull back ahead. We put up the spinnaker and were able to catch
some cleaner air higher up and get past him. Unfortunately, we blew our lead
at the turn due to our inexperience w/ the asymmetric.
We decided to buy the UPS for several reasons. It's bigger than our current
asymmetric and sized for the Rhodes, and we're hoping it's easier to use -
we're pretty lazy <g>. We're hoping we can partially lower the halyard and
pull the furled UPS back to the mast w/o having to unfasten anything, and
still be able to tack the headsail over the lowered UPS. This should let us
set and douse it pretty quickly in the varying wind conditions of our local
lake.
We're also going to try a 135% genoa in windier conditions because we're not
really happy with the shape/performance of the partially furled 175%. We've
got the CDI flexible furler so we can do a headsail change fairly easily at
the dock, but it's not so much fun underway. We're hoping the combination of
the 135% and the UPS will give us better on-the-wind performance in windier
conditions and downwind performance that we'd otherwise miss from not having
the175%. We won't really know what sail combinations are going to work best
for given conditions until we get a chance to play around with them a bit.
Mark
