[Rhodes22-list] Boat Dogs

I used to sail with a Beagle who loved the water. When we sailed to
Catalina and anchored off shore, we would take her in 2 x a day after
feeding and watering and she seemed fine with that routine. I've known
sailors with small dogs train them to use the scented pads that you can get
in a pet store to "fill in". I've also heard of folks training their
pooches to "go" on the foredeck where it is easily washed off if you are in
circumstances where you can't go ashore frequently enough -- unlikely in a
Rhodes22. I don't know how you overcome their natural desire to want to
scratch, dig and cover another dog's scent, but I guess if the dog is
desperate enough...

One other tip. To help a dog climb up a ladder, if you put your hand behind
their neck as they are climbing, they can gain leverage by pressing back
against your hand. This has worked for the above-mentioned Beagle and also,
more recently, a poodle.

I always have a doggie life jacket on the dog to take advantage of the
"handle". You can use your hand or a boat hook to help the dog up.
