[Rhodes22-list] Trailer extension question

I have an old (1976) Triad Trailer with a  removable but fixed 9 ft extension.
I understand the newer trailers have a slide arraignment with the extension sides under the boat. 
Is that true?
Does the unused extension under the boat ever create any problems?

My plan is to modify my extension for 3 ft. I could cut off the remaining tube, but I would like to keep the 9 ft option.
