When I was in the Army in the mid 80's, we were offered the optional Montgomery GI Bill. The Army took $100 per months for 12 months. Then after you have served your term of service (a minimum of 30 months) You had up to 10 years to use your benefits of up to $10,800. Not much at that day's school tuition prices, but it was better than nothing.
I agree with the philosophy that says "Nothing of value is ever free." My father used to say "easy come, easy go" when I asked for anything. His explaination was if I was given anything free, I would not appreciate it. But if I worked hard for something, I would appreciate it more and take better care of it. This included all of my post high school education. He was 100% correct.
