Bob,
I found that article in the January 2003 issue of Practical Sailor. There's
a company named JHRG that makes products made of ultra high molecular weight
polyethylene (UHMW-PE), a.k.a. Spectra or Dynema. They make flak jackets,
bullet proof vests, etc. with the stuff. In an effort to minimize downtime
between government contracts, they started researching new lines. Among
these are mildew- and rot-proof canvas buckets and various sizes of anchor
rode and dock line anti-chafe sleeves. The article said they were offering
them to Practical Sailor readers for $14.95 for the chafe guards and $29.95
for the buckets.

Thanks for the suggestion. In my 30 years of boating I have limited
experience with overnight anchoring.
How do I know hard twine when I see it? What is the recommenced method of
application.

There are a variety of fairleads which you can buy and thru-bolt to the bow
of your boat. Most seem to work OK but proper bedding and mounting in the
bow may be physically challenging.
Check the West Marine Catalog for a selection of anti-chafe devices (of
varying effectiveness). If you are always going to use the full length of
your anchor rode, which I recommend, you can whip the appropriate area with
hard twine. Cheap effective and looks good.
