As Mark defines the lee board, they do the same thing as our swing keel on
the R22.  When you're going up wind, you drop the one on the lee side to
create lateral resistance, or in other words, prevent sideways slippage.
The waters there are shallow and the boats have little or no keel, so the
lee boards are ideal for their conditions.  Not that I'm complaining, but if
you consider the trouble we go through to maintain or repair our
centerboards, the lee board are quite ingenious in their simplicity.  You
can see how easy it would be to remove them.
