Last summer I motored (no sailing) from Brooklyn under the Verrazano bridge,
around Staten Island and back to Brooklyn. The trip took slightly more then
10 hours and according to my GPS I covered about 45 miles.
I started with slightly less then full tank of fuel and there was about a
pint remaining in the 5.5 gallon tank when I got back to Brooklyn.
The engine was a 2002 5.5hp Nissan four stroke. I ran the whole trip at
about 60% throttle.
Via simple arithmetic I averaged 4.5 knots and my fuel consumption was about
8-9 miles/gallon.
Given the length of the trip. The fact that I had helping and offsetting
counter currents that coupled with the constant RPM of the engine leads me
to believe that this is pretty good data.
