Unlike Elton, my exposure to concert promoting was
very short. I used to fly a promoter from Little Rock
in the early 80's and he invited me to a Walynn
Jennings concert at Delta State University in
Mississippi. Because I was an accounting student at
the time he enlisted me in "cash counting" with the
University officials just before the music started.
About fifteen minutes into the count the promoter told
me to leave for the airport, have the engines running,
and wait for him to show up. An hour later he came
running across the tarmac with two briefcases, jumped
in the plane and yelled "hit it!". He didn't tell the
whole story but they seemed to have come up a "bit
short" to pay the expenses of the band and the arena.
I decided to stick with more mundane ways of making a
living like flying jets and stayed away from concert
promoting and accounting.
