Walter,
I have the Raymarine ST-40 wind instrument and it is great for windspeed. I
can get true and apparent wind readings since it was hooked up to the
knotmeter. The wind direction function is questionable - I use the windex
for wind direction. If you really want good wind direction information,
spend the extra money on the ST-60 - it works very well, but is a lot more
money, about $400 more if I recall. The windex is much cheaper. The wind
direction I get on the ST-40 is just not that accurate. The unit overall
has been trouble-free and wind speed function is very good and valuable. Of
course, the unit is only a year old, so we'll have to see how it ages.

I also have the cleat on my step to tie down the hatch. It still doesn't
keep the hatch closed if you really want to force it open.
