the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments were a direct result of the civil war..it 
was the only way the north could impose its views on the south..the north 
could not do it on a state by state basis...it had to get a national law passed 
(these amendments) in order to eliminate the function of the 10th amendment  
(states rights)..basically the 14th has been used to impose federal law and the 
bill of rights  (except for the 10th amendment) on the states....this is what 
judge moore forgets when he argues the first amendment in the alabama ten 
commandments case...the 1st amendment may say that congress shall pass no law but 
the 14th applies that language to the states...needless to say our society has 
changed greatly as a result of the 14th amendment..it paved the way for a 
federal takeover of many state functions...coupled with the 16 th amendment...the 
income tax...it gives the ultimate control of governance to the feds...it is 
interesting to note that when the constitution was written the main purpose for 
the census was to divide the cost of the federal govt among the states..ie if 
virginia had 1/4 of the population it would pay ...as a state ... 1/4 of the 
cost of the fed govt..how it got the money from its citizens was not the feds 
concern...today the main purpose of the census is to see how much the states 
get from the feds....an interesting turnaround ,...this is a direct result of 
the 14th and 16th amendments..for good or for bad
