Bill,
I think Steve is still an Arkansas state employee. I had lunch with Steve in
Litle Rock a while back. I enjoyed meeting him. It is obvious Steve and I
disagree on Iraq but for the most part our politics are not too far apart.
I have to admit that some of his comments were starting to get to me. Folks
can disagree, not a problem. There is no need calling a group of people
wimps or pusses just because they don't agree we should attack a country
that has not attacked us. It seems those who have never had any part of war
are the first ones wanting to send our troops out to fight. It is easy to
thump your chest and spew a bunch of macho talk. I know plenty of vets that
have seen action, most of them have a much different attitude about war then
Steve. (see Rummy's email)
Growing up the son of a 30 year career military officer I have a healthy
respect for our Armed Forces. All of my parents friends are ex-military and
for the most part quite conservative. Even my extreme right wing Father is
worried about the direction of our foreign policy. My father in-law (retired
Air Force Colonel) lived in Isreal as a military advisor for three years in
the 80s. He is one tough SOB and he thinks we went in too early as well. I
guess in Steve's eyes they are both wimps too.
I would suggest that if Steve feels so strongly about this war that he go
ahead and enlist. If he is too old (I know I am!) he can just apply for a
job with one of the private firms that is doing security work over there. He
can show us pusses how a real American can kick ass. :-)
