the problem is I am pretty sure it was not aluminum, the way the "grain" was showing (like a chipboard pattern) some type of
galvanized steel.

Michael,
In Florida, aluminum is the thing in boat trailers.  No rust.  Some
pretty big boats are going on aluminum.  Because aluminum has to be bigger
than steel for the same strength, these trailers look very stout.
