Hi Everyone,

The list is very quiet today. So, I thought you might enjoy seeing a photo my older son Daniel took as an assignment for his color photography class at NMU last semester. The picture was taken on November 25, 2004 at an expressway rest area on I-69 about 15 miles east of Flint, MI. The four of us were driving to my brother's house in Romeo, MI for Thanksgiving dinner. This snow covered dogwood tree was just growing beside one of the buildings in the rest area and the bight noon day sun had it light up just about perfectly for Daniel's purposes. He took about six shots of the tree from various angles and distances while the rest of us were using the bathroom. The purpose of the assignment was demonstrate using proper lighting and exposure to get maximum color contrast and saturation in a scene with a lot of bright white in it. They had to shoot the assignment using high resolution ISO 25 Fuji color transparency film. Apparently, this film has a marked tendancy to render bright white areas with a bluish cast and that was a no no. The color contrast between the bright white of the snow & the bright red berries makes for a rather striking photo.

This digital image really doesn't do the original photograph justice either. You should see the image viewed as a 35 mm color transparancy or an 8 X 10 glossy print! I scanned an 8 X 10 glossy print at the highest possible resolution to get this digital image. The limitations of my scanner become painfully obvious; but, it's still a neat photo.

Oh yes, Daniel aced this assignment!
