Stay away from pistols/revolvers unless you are already a) an excellent shot
while running and ducking for cover and b) have been shot at before and
survived because of a handgun.

If you must have something, then I recommend a marinized shotgun. Short
barrel, 20 gauge. Keep EXCELLENT records and be prepared to declare
everywhere you travel (checking in and out of port I mean). Odds are you
won't be permitted to keep it in a foreign port anyway. On the high seas,
the short distance of shotgun will give you a chance to evaluate friend or
foe and take action f the latter and you are not outnumbered. It would be
nice to kill the bad guys before they board, but the reality is most people
(at sea) are not bad guys and shooting when you get them in your telescopic
sights with a long rifle will likely result in you killing an innocent.

Better, learn to use the tools you have onboard for self defense. Spear gun
flare gun, marlinspike, etc. Buy, if you want, capsicum spray (but learn
how to use it and know what direction the wind is coming from when you do!).

Best, learn your tools AND take self-defense courses specifically targeted
to fending off muggers. Street fighting is dirty business but can be
learned much more quickly than ju-jitsu, karate, etc.

Worstest, being so afraid of the bad guys you stay at home....
