does not work, it to lite and will runn off in a few weeks,, them problem is just as much the inner and outer tube rusting as is the
gears, you need something that will coat everything inside those suckers.

Jim,
White marine grease has already been suggested. I also recommend
just plain oil, it can get inside. And when not necessary, turn the jack
sideways so water can not pool inside.

I already bought, but have not yet installed, a replacement. What I would
like to know is whether I am missong some maintenance step that would keeep
this from becoming an annual event. BTW, I launch and recover in salt water.

Jim,
Trailer jacks are notorious for failing when you least expect it for no
reason. Just replace it.
