We found out that we have to be certified with the Coast Guard with the 26.
As we took out a loan for a portion with BoatUS, the Bank they use (Sun
Trust), requires certification, which they took care of for us. Not sure if
all banking institutions require that, but they did. As far as as a
capacity label, I guess we'll find out once we get the information back from
the USCG, which can take anywhere up to 3 months or so. We have found out
that the bank, BoatUS, State of Illinois, USCG, all assume we know what to
do. No one has offered instructions. We've never had to be certified with
the Coast Guard before and hadn't a clue, so it took many phone calls to
various institutions to figure it all out as to what we needed and where to
find forms... government wants their portion too you know. Have to be
certified with the Coast Guard, and since we'll be sailing over 2 months of
the year, regitstered with the state. Right now, we 'think' we've got it in
control and are waiting for separate BOS's from GB, one for trailer, one for
boat. In the meantime, we've copied any and all applications and forms
we've filled out to have onboard in case we get pulled over by the USCG.
Not having any #'s on the bow would probably raise a red flag to the USCG
boats that have been stationed at the mouth of the harbor... we'll find out
tomorrow when we take our first sail, weather permitting. I guess time will
tell all.

The regulations state: applies to monohull boats less than 20' in length,
except sailboats, canoes. Kayaks and inflatable boats. But, it must have a
sticker with the statement: "This boat not rated for propulsion by a
motor."
