Gil,

The Bayfield 36 is another boat we liked - it's a Canadian boat, also
designed by Ted Gozzard, shares a lot of the design features of the Gozzard
36 (clipper bow, relatively shallow draft, etc.), and is generally less
expensive. We saw one in Florida that was our 3rd choice. Separate
tub/shower w/ sit-in tub, included <g>, <4' draft. Very nice boat for the
money.

Mary Lou, Don,

There are so many choices out there it can be dizzying. As you already know,
it's all about compromises.

We went round and round about what we wanted - what compromises we were
willing to make vs. what we could afford, etc. One of the deciding factors
was the Tayana's 6'4 headroom. Another was her classic lines w/ the canoe
stern. Another was the incredible amount of storage space - lockers
everywhere! Over a year ago when we first started looking I was initially
drawn to the Tayana, the Hans Christian, the Lord Nelson, etc., etc. 'cause
I really wanted a double-ender - I love that classic look. Then I started
writing them off as being too slow, too deep draft, too expensive, not
enough buoyancy in a following sea, less storage aft, blah blah blah. Ended
up coming full circle at the end. Go figure.

We must have looked at about 50 boats, not to mention all the time I spent
on the Internet seeing what was for sale, studying, etc. BTW - the advanced
search on yachtworld.com is great for window shopping - I'd punch in "used,
sail, cruiser, 28'-45', new in the last 3 days" every couple of days, just
to see what was coming on the market. Looked at photos, compared features,
read reviews, just generally got a feel for what was available. It was
really a lot of fun. Then we started actually visiting boats. Phew. Some of
our favorites were written off quickly - for instance, I loved everything I
read about the Corbin 39 (pilot house, well-built, fast) but all 3 of them
we visited were built for shorter people than me.

We liked the Tartan 37, but it, too, wasn't quite tall enough inside. We
also really liked the Bayfield 36 I mentioned above. We fell in love with a
Panda 38 we saw just before we bought Rachel, but it had a cracked mast
step, the rigging was shot, and it had teak decks near the end of their
life, etc., etc. Rachel was the only double-ender in the running at the end,
had been extensively cruised, was well maintained w/ lots of upgrades, was
ready to go now, and happily enough, was within our original budget. In the
end, it was a choice between going sailing now in a boat we really liked or
spending more money and waiting another year or two before we could even go
out in a boat we really loved. Or keep looking....and we were pretty tired
of looking by then. We knew we wanted to go sailing, not work on a huge
project, so it wasn't such a tough decision, in the end, and we're really
happy with her.

Mark

My current preference is a Gozzard 36 (<g>). It's big enough to
sleep 2 plus a big, clumsy sheepdog. More maintenance, but Air Conditiong
during this summer in the Chesapeake should make it more attractive. Any
time spent on water messing around on a boat is time to be treasured,
sailing or not.

I'm with Mark on this. I'd hate to have to subscribe to 5 or 6 different
lists to find out what my buds, the former Rhodies are up to. The Seaward
RK 26 appears to be a logical move up from an R22, though it appears that
36 & 37 footers are currently popular.

So here's a question for all the Rhodies out there, if you were to move up
(over or down) - what would your next boat be and why? One of the main
reasons we've stayed small is the ease of maintenance. We like having a
boat on the Chesapeake that we can haul home for the winter. We've talked
about retiring down near the Bay and that has brought consideration of a
bigger boat. Right now I've been looking at Tartan 28s. Supposedly good
sailing, Sparkman & Stevens design, nice deck layout (with the exception of
the bridgedeck traveller which would take some getting used to), good
cockpit, good engine access, good interior layout and some are even
available tiller-steered. Seems like a nice boat for a couple who still
would want to do a lot of daysailing but might want to take off on longer
trips.

Anyone else want to take a stab at this?
