Ed,

No, unfortunately, I won't be traveling anywhere before June 13--our date of
departure for Brazil. I wish I could--she tells me everything is blooming
like crazy down there.

Yes, I did hear of the sailor that was attacked in Brazil. We'll try to do
a little sailing while we're down there but if so, it'll just be a day sail
and no overnights. But in general, the crime is pretty rampant down there
so one has to be careful. Petty crime on the streets is quite common.
People will even come up and grab the eye glasses off your face and run. We
plan on leaving our gold wedding rings, watches, etc. at home. OTOH, if you
just use common sense--the same as you would walking around any major urban
area--you'll be OK. And we try not to wave the I'm-a-tourist flag.

We'll be spending most of our time in Recife--on the coast, about 8 degrees
south of the equator. Mary Ann lived there for 4 years and knows her way
around pretty well and speaks fluent Portuguese. When you know where you're
going and know what you're doing and go around mostly in the company of
others, it's pretty easy to stay out of trouble.

On our last trip, the worst thing that happened was when we had to cancel
plans for the day because we ran out of money, and most of of ATMs were
either broken or out of money themselves. We were forced to lay on the
beach all day and wait for the banks to open the next morning.
