Most of the under 10hp diesels are single cylinder. I understand that their
principal usage is for pumping irrigation water. In that application they
run constantly for thousands of hours. In marine usage, with raw water
cooling their lives are MUCH less.
They all have heavy fly wheels that keep them going even if they are 4
stroke.
