This incident, however it went down, is not the issue, only a symptom.

The appalling thing is that Americans elected (and could be poised to
re-elect) as their president a man who feels that he must restrict his
attention and his audiences, at the individual level, to only those who
slavishly agree with everything he says or represents.  He has nothing to
say to those with another view, except "get lost".  He does not understand
that his job is to represent all the people, not just the fraction who think
they share his religious "beliefs", or that his job is to be chief executive
of America, not just commander-in-chief of the military.

We must do better.
