Neil,
Hearing remarks like yours, and Rummy's and others who actually served in Vietnam gives me hope that we can finally put behind us what happened there. There was a lot of fault on both sides. The troops, most of whom were conscripted, were not supported by people who stayed behind as the war became increasingly unpopular. The two sides never reconciled their differences. It sounds like we are finally ready to talk about it.

Being a conscientious objector is not the same as being a coward. I
spent two years in Viet Nam as a helicopter pilot in assault
helicopter units. I can remember one conscientious objector with the
25th Inf Div (he objected to carrying weapons) who would get off the
helicopter and go into battle carrying only a medical bag. He
certainly was not a coward.
