[Rhodes22-list] Fred's pointing dog question

Ed/Fred
Are you guys talking true wind? It would be very hard to sail 35 degrees off
true wind and maintain any kind of boat speed. In my opinion a Rhodes 22 set
up to point is not the Rhodes 22 that most of us have. I think if one pays
attention and has their boat rigged right you can do a little better than
45%
The R22 like most any sail boat will point better with a boom vang and
standard main. I have IMF and my boat did not come with a vang. I got bored
one day while sailing and made a cheapo vang out of a single line. One end
is lashed to the base of the mast, a couple of inches up there is a bow line
on a bite, then the line continues to boom and secured with a lash, than
back down through the bow-line and secured with a truckers hitch and slip
hitch. You pop the slip hitch and the truckers hitch provides single
purchase. Even with IMF this was a big help. Provide proper tension on
outhaul, use the vang and traveler as needed.
Most of us have jib furlers. I love my Harken furler because it requires a
halyard. I can tension my head sail and when I race I try to get that thing
tight!. Those with the GB furler and the 175 love the combo for ease of use
but I would think this would not be a great set up for pointing. I think Ed
said he had his Genny furled to about a 100 and sheeted out side the outer
shrouds. I have found that when heading upwind with head sail less 125jib
sheets should run inside the outer shrouds. With a furled 175 this may not
work. It seemed to be true with both a 125 and 150. I also think a second
set of tracks is a must. I really wish I had them. I use cheapy home made
barber haulers to help improve sheeting angles but they are a pain.
Oh yeah, I have old style CB, I don't know how it differs in performance
from the Diamond Board.
