Cheryl, For someone who is just getting into sailing a recycled R-22 is a
great gift. Everything will work as intended, the boat will be set up right
in front of you so you can repeat the process next season. There will be no
missing parts, extra parts that seem to go nowhere. Unfortunately there
are no other manufacturers that provide this service. The downside is the
cost - much more than a person just starting into a hobby would feel
comfortable putting down. After you have been thru a few boats you will
look back and see it is actually not an unwise decision economically
speaking. If you have ruled out the cost of a recycled R-22 you may be
better off looking in the 2K range. That is kinda the fully depreciated
value of a servicable sailboat. You will be able to sell it again for the
same amount. You will sink some money into (1 to 3K) it to make it work for
you that will not come back at resale. You will also learn alot in a short
period of time about where things go and how they work/don't work. Most
sailors choose this path initally and can better apreciate the value of a
recycled R-22 or any other boat if available. I think you are on the right
path with trying to find a well cared for Rhodes available for a little
cheaper. There are a lot of nice Rhodes owners, hopefully you will find one
who will give you the same sales/service/advice/training that they got from
Stan. Good luck, let us know how it turns out.
