Cheryl and Don:
I actually learned to sail on a get out the sail bag, put it on the
front of the boat (bow) and clip it on the halyard and clip it to the stays
then take the other sail clip on the halyard, pull and feed in slots.
When I was looking for a boat, IMF was not in the equation. Boat
size, layout and a used boat with some recourse as to condition were my
deciding factors. Stan gives you a one-year warranty with his used recycled
boats. I had one problem. I had a stay that needed replacement. I sent it
to General Boats and got a replacement. Otherwise, he already had replaced
all running rigging and control lines.
You will find that lines have to be replaced periodically.
Therefore, it is a good thing to start with good lines. A exterior finish
does not last forever, and a recycled with a coat of paint will look good
from the start.
Standard main versus IMF? This is always an issue and center of
controversy on this list. The racers and purist want standard main.
However, those of us with the IMF have learned of its versatility. Ask this
question of Bill Effros. He has sailed boats with both. Ask this question
of Rummy, again he sails boats with both.
My opinion has become that the IMF combined with the furrowing Genny
will teach you more about sails, sail adjustments and sailing than the
standard main. Go back and read Bill Effros's past emails on this subject.
Just the past two years will be sufficient. Print them out and use your
pencil and highlighter.
You will learn more about how to sail on a Rhodes 22 with IMF
because it is more forgiving of mistakes, more tolerant of poor sail
adjustments and more durable than other boats. You will learn more from the
IMF than the standard main because the adjustments or fine-tuning is more
achievable than sailing with the cheap boat that Bob suggest. They do not
tolerate the mistakes that you will make. When you step onto a standard
sail main boat, you will better understand where to start with the sails
under varying conditions.
One other comment, with the R22 when the winds slack off and you
just waiting for a zephyr, you can stretch out in the cockpit and put your
head on the life preserver and cut zzzzzz's.
