[Rhodes22-list] Route -- Greenwich to Edenton

Slim,
I'm disappointed about the cards. I already know you don't do windows.
As oft threatened, I'm going to recycle my own boat this year. That's
why I'm taking it down to Edenton.
There is a chance I will then take the boat down to Florida. (There is
always that chance, however the boat will be closer to Florida...)
Chris's Baja adventure has been an inspiration.
My wife has actually given the go-ahead on this one, now it's just a
question of whether I will be able to get my shit together.
I am thinking in terms of renting a house on the water in the
Keys--possibly a house on an island--and using the boat from the house.
Many friends have shown an interest in this idea.
We have a good friend who lives in Coconut Grove, within walking
distance of Dinner Key marina which offers transient slips, a ramp, and
a hoist for dry sailors. They also have a 1960s Key West Style funky
bar on the water where you can sit all day and just be happy to be
alive--and warm. Our friend expects us this winter. There's plenty of
good sailing in Biscayne bay. There are live-aboards who give the whole
place a 1960s feeling. It's an uncommercial time-warp.
(Brad would be comfortable at Dinner Key -- It was built for Pan-Am when
they flew amphibious planes ("Flying Boats") all over the Americas.)
I've been tracking the suggested routes (thanks to all, and keep them
coming) on my new mapping program. I am seriously considering going
down one way, and coming back another. Then I've got to make the round
trip again. I am comparing the routes on the new program which is a
substantial software improvement, not to mention the improved
cartography. I find I get a lot of use out of mapping programs. I will
report back both on mapping program results and actual results. All
routes will be considered, and all reasons for taking different routes
will be factored in.
If I do the Edenton to Florida run, I'll go through this exercise
again. And since I'll be so close to Rummy, Ed, and others...how could
I just pass by without saying hello?
Russ, thanks for all the follow ups. Thanks, also to everyone else who
has responded, and all the back-channel suggestions. I drive a lot, and
I enjoy driving, so I know I prefer to know exactly where I'm going
before I start, and not to start improvising at 60 miles an hour while
towing a 3500 lb boat.
It doesn't take a lot of time to work out all the suggested routes while
I'm sitting in front of my computer. Thanks again for all the suggestions.
