Rick,
You would be better off using your extra outhaul line as a preventer.
When sailing downwind, wrap the outhaul a turn around the most forward
cleat on the boom. Then pass the outhaul line through the ring on the
inner jib sheet car on the same side as your boom. Secure with a couple
half hitches, or if the boom is far enough out, you can use the boom
cleat.
