Slim/Bill,

As it turned out, the WD-40 did an excellent job softening up the baked-on 
duct tape so I could rub the fabric off with the edge of a wood block.  Some 
mineral spirits I have in the garage dissolved the remaining adhesive and the 
smell of it helped with the New Year's Eve hangover.

You might try any naphtha product such as Ronsenol lighter fluid, Energine
Spot Remover or Coleman fuel.  Quite flammable but it should leave the paint
alone.
