I too have a Garmin GPS Map 76. That, and the auto pilot were the two
"gadgets" for the boat that my wife approved of.
When I bought the Garmin (and the Blue Chart for it) she wasn't
thrilled with the money spent. Then we sailed down the coast of Texas.
We were able sail along watching the GPS, and she'd say "We should be
passing a marker right about now", and there it was. The blue chart
actually had details of the marina that we pulled into. We've been
pleased with it, to say the least.

Backup suggestion is a good one. I have the Gamin GPS Map 76. It works
well
and you could plan the trip on your computer (are Gamin Blue Charts ok
with
Mac?) and enter all waypoints. You could print charts and load
waypoints
onto your GPS. Spend a little bit of time using the GPS before you go.
If you are worried about getting lost or GPS going down; mark your
position
at regular intervals on chart. Do some reading on dead reckoning and
coastal
navigation.
You will be fine!
