Exaltation of larks, rafter of turkeys, shimmer of hummingbirds, brace 
of woodcock, parliament of owls...it goes on, and on.  The problem is 
many of them are pre-Internet urban legends.  A guy wrote a book about 
this, starting from roughly the same place you started.  Then he started 
making things up.  It got passed around to the point where no one knows 
what's real anymore--they just can't find references earlier than the 
guy's book.

Hint--some of these animals don't travel in groups, so it's unlikely 
there was ever a word for them hanging out together.
