Bill,

You also mentioned your Rhodes was heeling while motoring. The flared hull 
does provide a little extra windage. IMF and big furled 170 do as well. I 
always try to sail as much as possible in those conditions but I do motor in 
and out of Blue Springs. The boat actually is more stable when motoring with 
CB up. It will not turn as sharp and you will lose a little headway but I 
prefer to motor with CB up or at least halfway up.  I lower for docking if 
needed.

It still was a wild day and I think the gustiest day I have been out in at 
least a year. I only saw one other boat out all day. I used to lower boom in 
these conditions but I like not having to have to worry out being hit in the 
head after some reverse gust.

When it is gusty like that you need to decide if you want to furl for gusts 
or furl for lulls. I unfurl jenny and find the right size. You need enough 
to power through the chop, wind, and current. I then unfurl the main. It 
would help all of us to rig boom vang. I have a temp one I have used from 
time to time and it really helps flatten main and reduce heeling.
