Phillip,

As Bill pointed out, if you're in cell phone range,
you've got internet available, albeit slow.  We
recently went on a cruise with our neighbors.  The
husband is a banker and had a couple of big deals
closing.  He had e-mail available on his Blackberry
for the first several hours out of New Orleans and
about 80 e-mails waiting when we got back in range. 
If you're staying near the coast, that will do.  My
best friend is a stock broker and wants to cruise so
we've been researching this issue as well.  Right now,
equipment for full satellite internet access runs
about 5K and the monthly service $60 and up.  Even
then its not worldwide service.  The real progress is
being made in the aviation world.  The airline
industry pays for the development but the general
aviation segment is the quickest to adapt and install.
 Like everything else electronic, the capacity doubles
and the price halves about every two years.  Right now
you can get XM radio downloads of weather and other
info for about less than 1K of equipment and $50 a
month.  You still need a phone patch for a response. 
If you wait about a year or so, full satellite service
should be available for less than a grand.
