i agree with rummy...i sail the chesapeake bay...i do use the gps compass  
and knotmeter to test sail position..for direction and speed...as for wind  
direction i use my left cheek and speed i spit on my index finger and hold it up  
in the air..if you choose this method i caution you not to use your middle  
finger in case theres a powerboater nearby
