Dear Ed,

I was there when Katrina hit and we are still in the area. I'd like to make a few points.

First, the TV coverage is not sensational - it is just the opposite. TV only shows a narrow view, like looking the wrong way thru a telescope. On the ground there is 360 degree destruction. The TV cannot begin to show what really happened in Parts of New Orleans and in Waveland and Clarmont Harbor and Bay St. Louis Mississippi. There is total destruction in every direction. Entire neighborhoods are gone, not flattened, the homes are just not there anymore. The TV also cannot convey the stink of death and of rotten garbage in the southern heat.

Second, please try to step back and see Katrina as an American tragedy and not as a political problem for the president. The people of Louisiana and of Mississippi are Americans like you, not foreign citizens.

Third, the Secretary of FEMA had been a cabinet level position. That was changed. FEMA was put into the Department of Homeland Security. A fellow with no emergency management experience was appointed as it's boss. The funding was cut.

Fourth, federal funds for the Corps of Engineers, specifically for levees in southern Louisiana have been cut each year for the last five years.

Cordially,

Hugh Penn
