[Rhodes22-list] Boom Room Update as of April 2nd

Dave,
As I understand Art's design, the top awning and frame are the only
fixed elements. The model shown is the basic model, and people can
alter the side panels to suit. The side panels can be screens. They
can be clear plastic (for exhibitionists or that "people in glass
houses" look). Or they can be rolled up plastic with screened inserts
like the PTE.
You get what you pay for. The prototype was an answer to the request
for something to keep you dry in the evening dew for under $1000 that
was easier to erect than Slim's model, and had a little more class than
just throwing a blue tarp over the boom. I gather from Art that the
prototype can be produced for our group at a final cost of under $1,000.
The prototype can be wedded to an existing PTE with a different front
flap than the one pictured. This flap could pick up the Velcro on the
top of some of the later model PTEs, and possibly some of the existing
cabin top snaps, as well. The PTE/BR might have a screened rear flap,
and solid sides. This might provide ample light and ventilation through
the PTE--or not. We would have to build one to find out. Screened
window panels can always be attached to the top frame at a later time.
They will just cost money.
The frame itself can be extended in any direction. But there is
probably little need for most of us. As a practical matter, most of us
will confine our walking in the Boom Room to the floor space in the
cockpit, and the area covered by seats and lazarette will be used mainly
for sleeping, and will not require full height.
I think Stan has said he is happy to have us work out the kinks, and is
not looking for a cut. This BR is Art's design, and Stan will offer it
if it meets Stan's standards. I think as Stan comes up with Spitzer
modifications and fabrication techniques that make the design work
better for the R-22, he might make a deal with Art similar to the Triad
deal where the custom R-22 version is sold only through General Boats.
Fair enough.
I think everyone planning to buy a BR from Art should think about the
modifications he or she might want, and get Art to start thinking about
what those modifications would add to the basic cost. I think we should
do this in an open forum, so everyone benefits. There is no problem if
no one wants a basic model--the point is only that Art can make them for
$999. Larger frame? How much larger? What would it cost? PTE front
flap? Extra cost, or the same cost? Full side screen? How much?
Partial side screen with roll up clear plastic window? How much?
And so on.
Now that Art has had some experience with creating one to order, he can
judge his costs and time better. Some small incremental improvement may
cost much much more than it is worth to any of us. Now is the time to
find out.
